Celebrating Barnet’s Volunteers

Celebrating Barnet’s Volunteers
at the Fourth Barnet Community Volunteer Awards

Date: Thursday, 25th March 2010
Time:
6. 00 pm onwards
Venue:
Hendon Town Hall, Committee Room 1 and 2, The Burroughs, Hendon NW4 4BG

Recognising Barnet’s invisible working force is the drive behind the Barnet Community Volunteer Awards. There are 1000’s of volunteers across London’s second largest Borough giving their time, sharing their skills and helping to make a difference to our Community.

The Awards will be presented by the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Coleman. They are a way of acknowledging the hard work and effort put in by all the volunteers within the London borough of Barnet who have completed a minimum of 100 hours of volunteering within the last year. Volunteer Centre Barnet (VCB), which is part of CommUNITY Barnet, is responsible for delivering this programme.

The fourth Award ceremony will take place on 25th March 2010 when 317 volunteers from 37 different organisations in Barnet will be receiving their certificates. The oldest volunteer receiving an award is 88 and the youngest is 16 so proving that age is no barrier to volunteering! A 99 year old Award winner in 2009, Amy Jones, has been quoted as stating, “one doesn’t do voluntary work to get the recognition for it. I have had a good life … so I thought I should give something back sometimes.” Her statement embodies the spirit of the Barnet Community Volunteer Awards.

Barnet Volunteer Awards Coordinator, Misha Bhatt-Shibu, said: “Everywhere we look, volunteers play a significant role in our daily life either as volunteer police, carers, mentors or youth workers. Barnet Community Volunteer Awards signify the important contribution made by all the volunteers in Barnet. It is our way of saying thank you to all the volunteers for their time, effort, commitment and for the difference they make.”

We are very grateful to Barnet Council for allowing the use of the Town Hall free of cost for this prestigious award ceremony.
