‘Friends of Avenue House’ supporters’ group works to help save Avenue House Estate

As we have previously reported, a group of local people have re-formed the ‘Friends of Avenue House’ to raise money to save the House and Grounds for public use.

Spokesman Carl Gombrich explained the aims of the group. “We are a group of local people from many different backgrounds who have come together to support the Avenue House Estate. The Estate is managed by an independent charity for the benefit of the people of Finchley. It receives no revenue support to maintain the grounds. In the longer term, we want to help put the Estate on a sustainable financial footing. But we know that in the short term, we have to raise funds in the coming weeks simply to enable the Estate to survive.

“We all feel strongly that the Estate and Grounds were left to the people of Finchley and must continue to be enjoyed by all the people of Finchley and of London. As members of the community, we all wanted to do our bit to support the Estate, especially now that it urgently needs help to save it from insolvency and help it to continue. We know that lots of people feel the same way, and feel that the community should now come together to save this beautiful local resource.”

Christine Kavanagh, one of the new Friends, says: “We very much hope that local people will be able to support Avenue House in different ways. We are organizing ‘Trees, Tours and Teas’ an Open Day at Avenue House from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday 20 March. As well as tours of the House, Gardens, and Bothy Gardens, Children’s tours, and refreshments, this will be an opportunity for people to meet the Friends of Avenue House. Entry will be free and we hope that as many people as possible will come and show their support. The Trust urgently needs funds to keep Avenue House open in the short term. To send donations or request standing order forms, people should go to the Trust’s website: www.avenuehouse.org.uk

Sandra Rebak, chair of the Friends adds, “The new Friends of Avenue House are working hard to keep people informed of developments. We are developing an improved website www.friendsofavenuehouse.org and a Facebook page, and will soon be announcing a number of events and initiatives. In the meantime, people can join us or find out more about our activities by emailing: info@friendsofavenuehouse.org
